Dhoni, 33, who was nurturing a fractured thumb would have missed the originally scheduled first Test in Brisbane. But the tragic death of Australian batsman Phillip Hughes and the subsequent bereavement forced the much anticipated series to reschedule.
The first Test was originally scheduled to start last Thursday. However, after the rescheduling, the series will start on Tuesday. It allowed the Indian captain to join the visiting team in time, ahead of the all-important series opener. He arrived in Adelaide on Saturday.
India will hope to use their tour game credentials to start the series on a positive note.
