One-off Test, Day 3: India vs Bangladesh - As it happened...

Shakib Al Hasan and rain continued to play spoilsport in India's drive to get quick runs as the visitors reached 462 for six against Bangladesh when weather forced an early end to Day 3.

New Delhi: The third day's play in the one-off cricket Test between India and Bangladesh was called off early due to persistent rain here on Friday.

Day 3

India - 1st Innings

Tea report - Rain, Shakib halt India's push for quick runs

Starting the session after a one-and-a-half-hour delayed start due to rain during lunch time, India lost Murali Vijay (150) as Shakib (4-105), who had already taken two wickets in the first session, got the opener lbw to break a 114-run fourth-wicket partnership.

Touching the 150-run mark, Vijay missed a sweep shot that hit him on the back pad and even though the point of impact looked outside the off stump, umpire Kumar Dharmasena raised the dreaded finger.

Leg-spinner Jubair Hossian (2-113) also joined forces to clean up Wriddhiman Saha (6) with a well-disguised googly, which the wicketkeeper batsman was unable to read while going for an expansive drive.

Shakib continued his wicket-taking run as his arm ball denied Ajinkya Rahane (98) his fourth Test century.

With a clear intent to push the scoring rate, Rahane went for an aggressive pull shot but the ball crashed on to the off stump.

Ravichandran Ashwin (2 not out) and Harbhajan Singh 7 not out) then tried to stitch up a partnership but rain came pouring down once again and the players rushed back to the pavilion.

Earlier, starting on 239 for no loss after the second day's play was lost due to rain, India moved on cautiously with Vijay reaching his sixth Test ton in the eighth over of the day but the Shakib-led spin attack had other ideas.

With play starting half-an-hour early to cover up for lost time, Shakib struck with his left-arm spin to send Shikhar Dhawan (173) back to the pavilion in the 68th over of the innings.

Coming down the track to counter Shakib's spin, the left-handed Dhawan found a leading edge as the ball lobbed into the waiting hands of the bowler.

The 283-run opening stand though fell 6 runs short of the record first-wicket partnership (289) between the duo in Mohali against Australia in March 2013, which was Dhawan's debut.

New-man Rohit Sharma (6) could not even settle in as Shakib spun another wicket for his side on a track that is looking spin-friendly on the third day.

Looking to drive a length ball, Rohit could only see his off stump cart-wheeling much to the delight of the Bangladeshi players.

With their tail up, the spinners got Vijay and Indian skipper Virat Kohli (14) on the defence even as the duo managed to find a few ambitious hits to the fence.

Jubair then broke through in the 75th over to get the prized wicket of Kohli.

The Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium exploded when Jubair delivered the googly spot on as a driving Kohli got an inside edge on to his pads and the ball rolled on to the stumps.

The Mushfiqur Rahim-led Bangladesh continued with the old ball even after the 80th over as spinners tried hard to fetch another wicket.

Even though Jubair had a few close calls and the hosts took the second new-ball in the 89th over, Vijay and Rahane played out the remaining session without much drama.

Ajinkya Rahane missed out on a ton as he failed to execute his pull short to Shakib's shot, quick delivery. The right-hander would be gutted for not getting those 2 runs to get to yet another three-figure mark. Shakib has been the most successful bowler for the hosts, picking up 4 wickets so far

Earlier, wicketkeeper-batsman, Saha failed to make an impression as he failed to pick up Hossain's googly and lost his stumps.

Rahane b Shakib Al Hasan 98 (103b)

Saha b Jubair Hossain 6 (10b)

Over 98 | Score 424/4 (Saha 0*, Rahane 75*)

Vijay played the ball from Shakib on his pads to the right of short midwicket to bring up his 150. That's his third score of 150-plus.

However, he got out attempting a sweep shot off the left-spinner. The replays showed that contact was outside the line of off stump. The opener will feel it was a harsh decision by Dharmasena.

Vijay lbw b Shakib Al Hasan 150 (272b)

Over 96 | Score 419/3 (Vijay 148*, Rahane 72*)

Ajinkya Rahane came out firing in the post-lunch session. The right-hander attacked the bowlers, picking up three boundaries. Vijay on the other hand has been calm, rotating strike and allowing the Mumbai batsman to express himself.

Match summary

The fans who turned out in big numbers to watch the second day's play between India and Bangladesh were left disappointed as not even a single ball was bowled on Day 2 as a result of persistent rain.

While the ground staff did an excellent work on Day 1 where play was resumed after quite some time, the heavy rain today made sure that the Indian batsmen couldn't continue with their run fest.

At stumps on Day 1, India were 239/0 after Murali Vijay (89*) and Shikhar Dhawan (150*) stitched a huge opening stand.

It was forgettable day for the hosts where Indian openers Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay sent them on a leather hunt without any trouble. Bangladesh's plan to play three spinners and two pacers totally backfired as the duo made full use of the lack of pace on offer and scored boundaries at will.

India were 107/0 before heavy rain interrupted play on the opening day. At one point of time, the dark clouds hovering over the stadium made it look like there would be no more play. But as a result of some excellent work done by the ground staff, the play resumed and Indian openers continue to pummel the lacklustre bowling attack to all parts of the ground.

Dhawan, who was not supposed to play the Test had Lokesh Rahul been fit, made the best opportunity which came his way and in case if he manages to hit a double hit, it would be very tough for the selectors to drop him.

Vijay, on the other hand, continued his good run in Tests and showed why is he being rated so highly in the longest format of the game.
