Virat Kohli's Dream Year: Here's how India captain dominated every Test he has played in 2016

New Delhi: Virat Kohli matched Indian legends Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid in one way or another as he continues to dominate world cricket with sublime batting and exceptional leadership.

On the third day of the fourth Test against England, he first became the only other Indian captain other than Gavaskar to score 500-plus runs. For the record, Gavaskar did it twice — did it twice: 1) 732 runs at 91.50 against West Indies in 1978-79 and 2) 500 at 62.50 against England in 1981-82.

Then, the 28-year-old crossed the 1000-run mark in 2016, thus equaling the record feats achieved by Tendulkar and Dravid – that of an Indian captain scoring thousand runs in a calendar year. Tendulkar scored 1000 runs in 1997 and Dravid scored 1095 runs in 2006.

But these records hardly summed up the year Kohli is having. And still a Test match to go before we say bye bye to 2016, he can sure create at least few more records.

Here's a look at how the year has been so far, match by match:

1. 200 (1st Innings) vs West Indies at North Sound in July 2016 (India won by an innings and 92 runs)

2. 44 (1st Innings) vs West Indies at Kingston in Jul 2016 (Match drawn)

3. 3 & 4 vs West Indies at Gros Islet August 2016 Test (India won by 237 runs)

4. Did Not Bat vs West Indies at Port of Spain August 2016 (Match drawn)

5. 9 & 18 vs New Zealand at Kanpur in September 2016 (India won by 197 runs)

6. 9 & 45 vs New Zealand at Kolkata in September 2016 (India won by 178 runs)

7. 211 & 17 vs New Zealand at Indore in October 2016 (India won by 321 runs)

8. 40 & 49* vs England at Rajkot in November 2016 (Match drawn)

9. 167 & 81 vs England at Visakhapatnam in November 2016 (India won by 246 runs)

10. 62 & 6* vs England at Mohali in November (India won by 8 wickets)

11. 206* vs England at Mumbai December (on Day 4)

Since returning as the victorious Indian youth team from the 2008 U-19 ICC World Cup in Kuala Lumpur to helping India regain No.1 spot in Test rankings early this year, India's milestone has come a long, establishing himself as the gold standard of batting.

Then, there are two other forms of cricket, where he is already regarded as a legend.

Yes, he is also vying to become one the most successful captains. And a win in Mumbai will give him five back-to-back series wins.
