Virat Kohli's tweet supporting Anushka Sharma is Golden Tweet of 2016

New Delhi: On and off the field, Virat Kohli has been a phenomenal these last couple of years. But the India Test captain was in for a surprise when one of his social media post declared Golden Tweet of 2016.

Interestingly, that post pertains to his girlfriend and Bollywood star Anushka Sharma. Posted on March 28 earlier this year during one of his lowest personal periods, the 28-year-old batting prodigy asked people to have some compassion on Anushka.

He also declared that Anushka "has always only given" him "positivity". Here's what he wrote then:

Indian cricket's power-couple was going through a rough patch, and their disagreement over marriage was said to be the reason behind the purported break-up.

This has led to people started trolling Anushka by linking Kohli's superhuman performances during the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 in India.

In the tournament, Kohli scored 273 runs at an average of 136.50 with three fifties. India, however, failed to make the final, losing the second semi-final against the eventual champions West Indies despite a brilliant unbeaten 89 off 47 balls from the vice-captain, two days after posting that Tweet.

In a brave move, Kohli took to the popular social media platform to not only chide those trollers, but also given a new window to his love-life.

That Twitter post has since been retweeted more than 40,000 times with more than one lakh likes.

For the uninitiated, the Golden Tweet 'award' is for the most retweeted tweet of the year.

Now, they have a stable relationship and were last seen together, dancing together, during Yuvraj Singh's Goa wedding.
