New Zealand (2nd innings) 123/4 (Over: 34.6) | India (1st innings) 353 all out | New Zealand (1st innings) Score: 365 all out ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SECOND SESSION REPORT New Zealand (123/4) lead by 135 runs with 6 wickets remaining at the end of second session on Day 3 of the 2nd Test at Bangalore. At the start of the post lunch session, Umesh Yadav’s early burst saw him scalping the wickets of Martin Guptill (7) in the very first over after lunch and then accounted for the departure of dangerous Brendom McCullum (23). The aggression shown by the Kiwi openers fell flat there as Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor bide their time in the middle. The run-flow was stopped by some tight bowling by Zaheer Khan and Yadav who finally got his line right and reaped rewards. Ashwin’s first over in the second innings produced the wicket of Kane Williamson (13) but Ross Taylor carried on solidly. Daniel Flynn who joined Taylor resisted the urge of sweep and looked far more settled as compared to his previous innings. New Zealand were looking good for a decent total but the wicket of Ross Taylor by Pragyan Ojha might have turned the tide in India’s favour a little bit. Taylor literally gifted his wicket getting out trying to sweep. James Franklin (11*) and Daniel Flynn (25*) are at the crease for the visitors right now. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ And that is the end of second session! 30 overs bowled in the session with New Zealand scoring 94 runs with the loss of four wickets. New Zealand (2nd innings) 29/0 (Over: 4.6) | India (1st innings) 353 all out | New Zealand (1st innings) Score: 365 all out ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ FIRST SESSION REPORT India started Day 3 at 283/5 and in the first session itself New Zealand bowled out the hosts for 353 runs in the first innings taking a slender lead of 12 runs. Tim Southee was the wrecker-in-chief finishing with a career best figure of 7/64 in 24 overs. He picked up four wickets today including the scalps of centurion Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. Earlier, Virat Kohli went past his century but was the first wicket to fall when he was on 103 as soon as the Kiwis took the new ball. The new ball was available just after two overs and Ross Taylor did not hesitate to take the new ball. The results were imminent as Southee, Boult and Bracewell had Kohli and Dhoni in troubled waters. Dhoni was beaten all ends up more often than not with the moving ball. Kohli got to his century in the 5th over of the day with a flick in front of square, but perished in the next over itself. Kohli offered no shot as the ball crashed into his pads in front of the wickets. Kohli shouldered arm to the straight delivery expecting it to move away but the ball held its line and moved in off the pitch only due to the angle. It was good bowling by Southee as he bowled it with a cross seam. All the previous balls were moving away from the right-handers but not that one. Southee made the batsmen play and he stuck to his line and length, occasionally changing the grip of the ball and using his wrist well to get that extra rip. Next to depart was Dhoni who looked out of sort right from the moment ball started to move. Dhoni was adjudged out LBW for 62 runs. Dhoni did not commit to the front-foot and stayed rooted to the crease. Zaheer Khan (7) started off with a huge six down the ground but he, along with Ojha (0) were send packing immediately. The pacer finished with a recording breaking spell of 24-6-64-7 with an economy of 2.66. But Ravichandran Ashwin proved to be a tough cooking cracking a couple of handsome drives as he stitched together a vital 33-run partnership with Umesh Yadav (4) to help India reach 353 runs. After Ashwin-Yadav played out nearly 9 overs, Trent Boult send Yadav packing to finish the Indian innings. Ashwin played a good hand of 32 and remained unbeaten. New Zealand openers came into bat for 5 overs with Brendon McCullum (21 runs off 15 balls) playing with an aggressive frame of mind along with Martin Guptill (7). New Zealand now have an overall lead of 41 runs over India with all of their 10 wickets remaining. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ So that is lunch! What an eventful first session that was. Beautiful drive by McCullum off Ojha, he just leaned into the wide ball and drove it to extra cover boundary. Pragyan Ojha into the attack now. NZ strike with the new ball. Kohli goes for a well made 103 (193b 14x4 1x6). Southee bowled it cross seam, good bowling, as all the previous balls were moving away from the right-handers but not this one. India (First innings) 301/5 (Over: 82.6) | New Zealand (1st innings) Score: 365 all out 300 up for India, now that is a rare sight in Test matches for India isn’t it? (no pun intended) CENTURY for Virat Kohli, his second in Tests, first on Indian soil as he flicks the legside ball in front of square and even before the ball could rech the fence Kohli takes off his helmet, raises his bat with a big smile and then kisses the helmet. Prund moment for him. Well played!!!. A clean and composed innings from the man of the moment. 101run in 187 balls assisted by 14 boundaries and one six and he is not done yet. WELL DRIVEN, Boult over pitches and Dhoni drives down the ground handsomely. 50 for Dhoni. 26th fifty for Dhoni in 69 Tests. Trent Boult into the attack as the new ball is taken. This would be interesting now, Boult will be looking for some swing. 3 slips and a gully. As always in a Test match, the key would be the morning session. Tim Southee and Trent Boult had troubled the Indian top order with the assistance of pace, bounce and the overcast conditions. India though clawed back courtesy Raina and Kohli. Dhoni is not that good playing the moving ball and he will be the Kiwis main target in the morning session. It is pleasant conditions in Bangalore with 50 % chances of rain. The new ball is due in just 2 overs. Test so far… Day 2: Indian youth brigade of Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina took center stage on a day when another failure with the bat for Sachin Tendulkar hogged the media limelight. Kohli, who came into bat at No.5 compiled a patient and gritty 93 runs and stitched a vital 99-run partnership with the under-pressure Raina who went all guns blazing in his knock of 55 runs. Kohli was unbeaten on 93 (174) along with captain MS Dhoni (46) when stumps were drawn with India on 283/5. India are trailing New Zealand by 82 runs. Tim Southee scalped three Indian wickets giving away 35 runs in 15 overs. Bracewell also picked up two crucial wickets but was a tad expensive going for an economy of over 4 rpo. Earlier, Raina had scored a breezy half-century (55) to silence his critics. Opener Gautam Gambhir failed to impress again as he went for 2 runs whereas Sehwag scored 43 runs before getting out to Bracewell right after lunch. Sachin Tendulkar got a peach of a delivery from Bracewell as the ‘Master Blaster’ departed for just 17 runs. Apparently, Sunil Gavaskar reckoned on air while commenting that age is getting the better of SRT. Day 1: Ross Taylor struck a brisk century as New Zealand recovered from an early setback to end the first day of the second Test on 328/6 at Bangalore on Friday before the play was stopped due to bad light. For New Zealand the first day began on a positive note as their captain won the toss and chose to bat first under the grey skies of Bangalore on Friday hoping to see off the initial movement of the ball and then set- up a platform for a big total.
