Mohali: An unbeaten half-century by Shaun Marsh and a five- wicket haul from Dimitri Mascarenhas helped Kings XI Punjab register their first victory in IPL 2012 on their home ground at Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, Mohali, Chandigarh on Thursday. Punjab defeated Pune by 7 wickets in a low-scoring game.

Gilchrist won the toss and chose to bowl first on a wicket which was a seam bowler's paradise. Ryder (7) was run-out in the third over of the innings as he ran for a single and Ganguly at the other end wasn’t interested. Uthappa (17), Mathews (11) in spite of getting starts could not manage to rescue their team from collapsing.

Mascarenhas exploited the pitch to the best and managed to pick up 5 wickets that restricted Pune to just 112 runs. Mithun Manhas (31) was the highest scorer for Pune as Harmeet Singh picked up 2 wickets.

Dinda got Pune side to a terrific start as he bowled Valthaty of the first ball of the innings! But Gilchrist (21) and Marsh (64) made sure that there was no more damage as they went to add 50 runs for the second wicket. Mandeep Singh and Marsh added 20 runs for the third wicket after which Piyush Chawla was promoted in the batting line-up ahead of David Hussey. Marsh and Chawla (21) went on to register their first victory without any further damage.

Dinda, Angelo Mathews and Rahul Sharma picked up one wicket each. Pune could not convert some of the tough chances as they also looked sloppy in the ground fielding. Kings XI Punjab had lost two of their previous matches whereas this is the first defeat for Ganguly-led Pune Warriors in IPL 2012.

Marsh in particular was the star batsman in the low-scoring match as he played some fine strokes which reminded of his dream run in 2008 IPL.
