Kolkata: The Kolkata Knight Riders fans were disappointed with the way their team started off this year`s IPL campaign. Gautam Gambhir scored three successive ducks, and his team didn`t look like it could make it to the play-offs.

But KKR have looked like an entirely different team, ever since Robin Uthappa was promoted up the order to open the innings.

The wicketkeeeper batsman has been in sensational form and before one could realise his incredible consistency, Uthappa had leapfrogged Glenn Maxwell as the highest run-scorer this year. Uthappa has scored 613 runs from 14 matches and is 80 runs ahead of Maxi, and 78 runs ahead of Dwayne Smith who is ranked second.

Kolkata are now on a seven-match winning streak, and Uthappa has notched up 40 plus scores in all those matches. He has timed his innings beautifully as an opener and his form eased off the pressure off skipper Gambhir, who went on to slam three back-to-back half centuries for his team.

Uthappa and Gambhir have often stitched century partnerships getting their team to rollicking starts, thus making the job of the rest of the batsmen much easier.

Uthappa`s stupendous form would have surely been noticed by Team India skipper MS Dhoni and the selectors. The 28-year-old has an opportunity to not only take KKR into the final, but also strengthen his case of a possible comeback into the Indian team.

Uthappa`s scores in the last nine matches: 41, 83*, 67, 40, 80, 46, 47, 65, 47
