New Delhi: If there is one person who has been the spearhead in shaping Kings XI Punjab`s fortune, it's been the swashbuckling Glenn Maxwell.
The Australian has taken the current Indian Premier League season by storm and exactly what Chris Gayle did in the last couple of seasons. The Australian big hitter who has amassed 533 runs from 13 matches, lies in third place as the highest run-getter. He recently lost the IPL Orange cap to Kolkata Knight Riders` Robin Uthappa. Maxwell has performed consistently well and has single-handedly won matches for his side.
But against a resurgent Knight Riders, Maxwell has gone out cheaply in both the matches so far. In the first encounter held in the UAE leg, Maxwell managed just 2 runs before being castled by Morne Morkel. Though KXIP won the low scoring affair, KKR most importantly had handed the match over to them with some woeful batting.
The next encounter in the Indian leg between these two teams at the Barabati stadium in Cuttack, saw KKR win in style. This time Maxwell scored a meager 14 runs before getting out to leg-spinner Piyush Chawla. In the two matches, Maxwell managed just 16 runs and this has been the bonus for Gautam Gambhir`s side.
After Tuesday's washout, Kolkata will hope to continue their pursuit of Maxwell`s wicket early on Wednesday at the Eden Gardens knowing his scalp will give them an outside chance to win the play-off tie. If Maxwell manages to unleash himself, then the Kolkata crowd will witness an effective onslaught that might just help the visitors in the evening.
Kolkata will hope it doesn't rain on Wednesday.
