Kerala takes 84-run lead against Tripura
Kochi: V A Jagadeesh and Sachin Baby scored half-centuries each to help Kerala reach 223 for five in reply to Tripura`s first innings total of 139 on the second day of their Ranji Trophy Plate Group `A` match on Friday.
At the draw of the stumps, Kerala were in command with a healthy lead of 84 with Sachin Baby unbeaten on 52 and Sony Cheruvathur not out on eight.
Resuming at an overnight score of one for no loss, Kerala`s Abhishek Hegde (40) and Jagadeesh (57) put on a solid 105-run opening wicket partnership to set the rhythm.
It was Udit Patel, who gave Tripura their first breakthrough by claiming the prized wicket of Jagadeesh for a well-made 111-ball 57, studded with five hits to the fence.
He then topped it up with a wicket of Robert Fernandez for a duck in the same over before he yet again accounted for a Kerala wicket, seeing off Hegde this time.
Three quick wickets suddenly gave a ray of hope to Tripura but Rohan Prem (25) and Sachin Baby steadied the boat and bring the hosts back on track.
The duo overcame Tripura`s first innings total before Patel added another wicket to his kitty in the form of Prem.
Baby, however, held on to his ground and along with K J Rakesh (24) put on a valuable 51-run stand for the fifth wicket.
After Rakesh was dismissed by medium pacer Rana Datta, in form Sony Cheruvathur joined Baby in the middle and the pair batted steadily to take Kerala to a healthy total before stumps were drawn.
Tripura 1st innings: 139 all out.
Kerala 1st innings: 223 for 5 in 91 overs (V A Jagadeesh 57, A M Hegde 40, Sachin Baby not out 52; Udit Patel 4/50).
