Lalit Modi to appeal against libel judgement

Lalit Modi is set to appeal against the libel case he lost to Chris Cairns on Monday.

London: Former IPL commissioner, Lalit Modi, is set to appeal against the libel case he lost to former New Zealand allrounder Chris Cairns on Monday. However, media reports have indicated that Modi has been denied the permission to appeal against the verdict but can contest the quantum of damages. Chris Cairns was awarded 90,000 pounds in damages by a London court for match-fixing allegations made by Modi against him in a tweet in 2010. Modi will have to cough up a part of the damages within the next 28 days and has until April 20 to file an appeal. Cairns was the captain of Chandigarh Lions in the Indian Cricket League but his contract was terminated during the third edition of the tournament in 2008. The official reason given was that Cairns had breached the terms of his contract by failing to disclose an ankle injury. Following this, then IPL commissioner Lalit Modi had tweeted that Chris Cairns had been removed from the 2010 IPL auction list because of his involvement with match-fixing during the Indian Cricket League. This was also construed to be a reason for his contract termination with ICL. Denying the claims of fixing, Cairns sued Modi for defamation.
