Let us not mix sports with politics: Pranab

Guwahati: Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today pleaded the people of the country not to mix sports with politics ahead of World Cup semi-final clash between India and Pakistan.

Asked to comment on the visit of Pakistan Prime Minister to watch the match in Mohali on March 30 along with Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Mukherjee told reporters here that "let us not mix sports with politics".

"Let sports be sports and politics be politics and do not read much into the visit of Pakistan Prime Minster to watch the match," Mukherjee said in reply to a query as to the occasion will help improve Indo-Pak relationship.

"I always hope to improve relationship with Pakistan. My neighbour is going to stay where they are and I will have to decide whether I will live in tension or peace. Our foreign policy is that we should live with our neighbours in peace," Mukherjee said.

"During my tenure as union commerce minister WTO was signed and we accorded the status of most favoured nation to Pakistan which the country has not reciprocated yet. Hope they will do so now," Mukherjee said.
