Porvorim: Solid half-centuries by Ankit Bawne (60 not out), Rohit Motwane (68 not out), Sangram Atitkar (52) and Nikhil Paradkar (67) enabled Maharashtra to make a strong start on the first day of their Ranji Trophy Plate League Group B match on Thursday.
At close of play, Maharashtra had reached 286 for four in 90 overs with Bawne and Motwane involved in an unfinished fifth-wicket partnership of 131.
Earlier Goa won the toss and put the opposition in.
The decision seemed justified when Goan bowlers made early inroads into the Maharashtra batting, dismissing both the openers to reduce the visitors to 24 for two in the 10th over of the day.
Medium pacer Saurabh Bandekar dealt the first blow, removing Harshad Khadiwale for five with the total on 17 in the 7th over with Amit Yadav taking the catch. His new-ball partner Robin D`Souza struck the second blow by having Rohan Bhosale, the other opener, caught behind by Rahul Keni for 14.
But thereafter Sangram Atitkar, coming one-down, and Nikhil Paradkar steadied the innings with a resolute stand of 119 before the latter was beaten neck and crop by a Robin. Paradkar`s 67 came off 118 balls and included 11 hits to the fence and one over it.
Atitkar struck seven four and a six in his 112-ball 52.
Maharashtra: 286 for 4 in 90 overs (Ankit Bawne 60 not out, Rohit Motwane 68 not out, Sangram Atitkar 52, Nikhil Paradkar 67).
