Malik`s future to be decided on Aug 15

Lahore: Pakistan`s former captain Shoaib Malik will know on August 15 whether his international career is over or will be revived.

Malik has been told by the Pakistan Cricket Board to appear before its integrity committee on August 15 here along with Test leg-spinner Danish Kaneria.

There has been widespread speculation that Malik has been cleared by the integrity committee after he was able to explain how he spent 90,000 pounds that was in one of his bank accounts by submitting all details of his assets and bank statements to the committee sometime back.

But a senior official of the board made it clear that Malik had not been cleared as yet.

"The present position is that the integrity committee has still not given clearance to Malik so he can`t play for Pakistan. He will appear on the 15th before the committee which will then decide what to do," PCB Chief Operating Officer Subhan Ahmad said.

Rumors about Malik`s possible comeback spread after the national selectors named him in the reserves for the tour to Zimbabwe that begins end of August.

"The selectors have named him but he is not eligible as yet for selection," Ahmad clarified.

He, however, conceded that if the integrity committee cleared Malik he could make an immediate comeback to the national team.

"If he is cleared than the selectors can also include him in the main touring squad," Ahmad said.

The 29-year-old, who has played 32 Tests, 192 ODIs and 32 Twenty20 internationals, has been out of the national side since last year.

"Don`t be surprised if Malik is immediately included into the touring squad and named vice-captain to Misbah-ul-Haq for the tour," one well placed source said.

Malik who was removed as captain in early 2009 by the present board has been accused of engineering groupings and creating intrigues within the team and the team management on previous tours put these issues down in their reports to the board.
