Mumbai: Madhav Mantri, maternal uncle of cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar, was on Friday honoured by the Mumbai Cricket Association which named its under-22 tournament after the former India stumper.

“I’m honoured by MCA’s decision and am especially happy that my name is being associated with a tournament for under 22 players who are very important to the future of not only Mumbai cricket but also Indian cricket,” said Mantri at the trophy unveiling function here.

The ex-Mumbai skipper recalled how he initiated MCA’s move, when he was in the managing committee headed by the late S K Wankhede, to name the gates of the Wankhede Stadium after stalwarts Vinoo Mankad and Polly Umrigar and the west and east stands after Vijay Merchant and his nephew Gavaskar.

The under-22 tournament would be a six-team event with two outstation squads, representing the Baroda Cricket Association and Madhya Pradesh CA, in the fray along with four MCA teams named after four star cricketers - Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Dilip Vengsarkar and Ravi Shastri.

The matches would be played over three days with the first two league ties to be held in Mumbai’s western outskirts - at Dahanu and Tarapore - while the third league tie as well as the final are scheduled at the MIG Club in Bandra and the MCA’s Bandra-Kurla complex ground respectively.
