Miandad accuses Butt of violating PCB`s code of conduct
Karachi: The dispute between the PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt and Director-General of the board Javed Miandad over the selection issues has got murkier with the latter accusing the former of violating the board’s code of conduct.
Miandad, a former Test captain and the national coach, who has been served with an explanation letter by the board for speaking on selection issues after the touring squad for
England was announced, today said that he was not bothered by the board’s notice and except President Asif Ali Zardari, no one can ask him to step down from his position.
“I was brought into the board by the chief patron, President Asif Ali Zardari as he wanted me to do something productive for the cricket. Only he can tell me to step down from the board, no one else,” Miandad told the ‘Express’ daily newspaper.
Miandad said that Butt himself has been violating the rules and regulations of the board by interfering in the selection matters.
“There are many examples where the board’s rules and regulations have been set aside by the Chairman. How can the chief operating officer of the board issues a notice to the respected member of the governing council which I am,” Miandad said.
He also accused the chief selector Mohsin Hasan Khan of violating the code of conduct by not consulting the other selectors of the board before announcing the 17-member squad for England Tour in Sri Lanka.
“Was it not a severe violation of the code of conduct and rules when neither the board nor Mohsin bothered to get the signatures of the other selectors before announcing the squad,” Miandad questioned.
The top batsman, who has played 124 Tests, said if chief Patron Zardari believes that his services are no longer required, he should release him.
“The chief patron brought me into the board so I will not resign. But if he feels my services are no longer required in the board then he can replace me,” Miandad stated.
The 53-year-old right-hand batsman said he spoke on selection matters in his personal capacity as a former captain and has every right to do so when there are glaring injustices while announcing the touring squad.
Butt has largely kept Miandad confined and restricted his authority and powers ever since he joined the board and not allowed him to interfere in selection or team matters.
