Karachi: Pakistan`s former Test batsman Mohsin Khan has expressed surprise over the method adopted by the PCB to appoint the new head coach of the national team.

The soft-spoken Mohsin said today he was disappointed at the manner in which the board had first invited applications for the post of head coach and than appointed Waqar Younis without bothering to interview other candidates.

"Even before the deadline for sending applications which was May 5th expired the PCB Chairman, Najam Sethi had already met with Waqar Younis and this is strange. If he had decided to appoint Waqar before hand why than advertise the head coach position and make a mockery of other candidates," Mohsin said.

The former player said he would soon address a press conference on the subject.

Mohsin remained interim head coach of the national side from September 2011 to March 2012, after Waqar had resigned on personal grounds.

During his tenure Pakistan beat Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and whitewashed England 3-0 in a Test series but he was later unceremoniously removed as the board brought in Australian, Dav Whatmore as his replacement on a two-year contract.

"Even than the board had not acted justly and given due respect to former players. It is their choice who they want to appoint and I have nothing against Waqar but this was not the way to go about things," Mohsin added.

Mohsin, who also remained chief selector before becoming interim head coach, said the board had set wrong precedents.

Meanwhile Waqar told a cricket website he had no issues working with either chief selector/manager, Moin Khan or senior all-rounder Shahid Afridi in his new assignment.

He also talked about building a formidable Pakistan unit for the 2015 World Cup.

Waqar had differences with Afridi in his earlier stint as head coach in 2010/2011.
