North Zone edge closer to Intl Zonal Women`s Cricket title

Chennai: The Anjum Chopra-led North Zone inched closer to the title in the Zonal Women`s ODI Cricket tournament here on Sunday after winning both their matches here.

Playing their second match after a thumping win over East Zone on Thursday, left-handed Anjum played a skipper`s knock of unbeaten 43 (94b, 2x4) to guide the team to a seven-wicket win over a strong South Zone, while Central Zone defeated East by eight wickets in an inconsequential match.

With two more matches to go in the tournament, North with nine points from two matches, have the best chance to win the title. North Zone are followed by South (5 pts), Central (5 pts) and East (minus two pts) and West (minus one) in the point table.

In tomorrow`s fixtures, North will take on West and Central will play South.

In their second match today, North chose to field and dismissed South for a lowly 128/8 in 50 overs and achieved the target in 45.4 overs, making 129 for 3. Besides Anjum, Reema Malhotra scored an unbeaten 41 (98b, 1x4).

For South Zone, Veda Krishnamoorthy top scored with 39 (4x4, 1 x6) and Sravanthi Naidu made 19 not out, while North off spinner Sneha Rana took two for nine.

In the other match, East, opting to bat, were 93 all out and Central opener Poonam Raut (44, 2x4) and India captain Mithali Raj (26 not out, 2x4) had no difficulty in surpassing the target, making 97 for 2 in 35 overs.
