Lahore: The government finally issued the notification confirming the appointment of Chaudhary Zaka Ashraf as the new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board.
But in an interesting development the notification issued by the Presidency confirmed that Zaka Ashraf would no longer work as Chairman of the Zarai Taraqyati Bank and would concentrate totally on his new role as cricket chief.
The spokesperson for the Presidency, Farhatullah Babar said that the appointment will take effect from the date that Zaka Ashraf relinquishes charge of the ZTBL.
Asked about the term of the new board Chairman, Babar said he would continue serving until further orders.
The term for the new PCB Chairman has become significant in light of the new governance system announced by the ICC where government and political interference in the affairs of member boards has been rejected and all boards have to implement the new governance system maximum by June, 2013.
Zaka Ashraf is yet to take charge of office at the Gaddafi stadium in Lahore although his predecessor, Ijaz Butt completed his three year term as Chairman on October 8.
Zaka Ashraf who is said to be very close to President Asif Zardari who is chief patron of the board and is also a senior member of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party central executive committee.
But today, he made it clear his top priority was to not only bring back international teams to Pakistan but also take steps to restore the image of Pakistan cricket worldwide which has been badly damaged by the spot-fixing scandal and the security situation.
