Oz opening batsman Cowan needs to grab opportunities like Warner
Sydney: Australian Test opener Ed Cowan needs to grab the opportunities, which are coming his way, just like David Warner, following a mild start to his career that has seen him score just one century in 13 matches, according to cricket writer, Malcolm Conn.
“David Warner`s brilliant innings (85 on day two of SCG Test against Sri Lanka) could not have created a greater contrast with his odd-couple opening partner Ed Cowan,” Conn wrote in his column for News.com.au.
“Warner is a crowd puller, a batsman who can set up a Test in a session as he did yesterday, racing to 50 from just 37 balls before going on to score 85 in 84 deliveries,” he added.
“Fellow left-hander Steady Eddie Cowan should be the great foil as a reliable opening partner who pushes the single and gets down the other end to watch Warner entertain at close quarters,” he wrote.
Conn added: “Warner and Cowan have reasonable numbers as an opening combination and even yesterday (day two of SCG Test against Sri Lanka) they put together 36, with Warner scoring 32 of them.”
“Of the 21 pairs who have opened the batting for Australia in 10 Tests or more, Warner and Cowan have amassed 981 runs together, putting them 11th on that list, and their average partnership of 47 has them seventh above David Boon and Geoff Marsh,” he wrote.
“Certainly Warner has come from nowhere to grab his opportunity after being pigeon-holed as a short form player by NSW just a few years ago. Cowan needs to do the same before it passes him by,” he concluded.
