Oz team arrives in Chandigarh for Mohali Test

Chandigarh: The Australian cricket team led by skipper Ricky Ponting on Monday arrived here, after landing in New Delhi, to play its first Test of the two-match series in Mohali starting October 1.

The team reached the five star hotel here this afternoon, where they would be staying for a fortnight.

In the wake of the firing incident at a tourist bus in Delhi yesterday, police here have beefed up security measures.

Foolproof security arrangements have been made at the hotel where the team is staying.

The team was escorted from the Chandigarh airport to their hotel under heavy security.

It is for the first time that the Australian cricket team would be staying in Chandigarh for a maximum period of 16 days (Sep 20-October 6).

Police sources said that they are not willing to take any chances with the team security and extra forces have been put on duty and vigil heightened to ensure no untoward incident takes place.

Australia is to play a three day practice match against the Board President`s XI at Sector 16 cricket stadium here followed by the Test to be played at Mohali.

Punjab Cricket Association along with the various working sub-committees yesterday reviewed the progress made for various arrangements in connection with the holding of the practice match.

A private security firm has been engaged to do the gate management here and ushering of spectators` to their respective stands. However, Chandigarh Police would be regulating the crowd and traffic to maintain law and order during the game.

The Test series between the two sides would be played in Mohali and Bangalore (October 9 to 13).

This would be followed by a three-match ODI series starting October 17. The matches are scheduled to be held in Kochi, Visakhapatnam and Goa.
