Karachi: The PCB and the Punjab government here have announced cash rewards for the selectors following the national cricket team`s impressive performance in the just-concluded World Cup.

Under Shahid Afridi`s captaincy, Pakistan reached the semi-finals of the World Cup, and chief selector Mohsin Khan demanded that the cricket board (PCB) should also reward the selectors for the national team`s performance.

Close on the heels of his demand, both PCB and the Punjab government have announced cash prize of 0.5 million rupees each for Mohsin, who quickly made it clear that he would be sharing the money with his colleagues.

"I am really grateful to the board and the chief minister of Punjab for their kind gesture in accepting my point of view which was a valid one," Mohsin said.

Citing the example of Indian selectors, who were given bonuses of 2.5 million each for the national team`s World Cup triumph, Mohsin said Pakistani selectors also deserved a similar treatment.

The former Test opener said it was necessary for PCB and the government to reward the players, management and selectors after a good performance as it will only encourage them to do better in future.

He pointed out that the selectors had played a vital role in Pakistan team`s resurrection in the last few months as did the management and players.

"I thought all of us equally deserved credit for the team`s good show," Mohsin added.

Besides Mohsin, the national selection committee includes four other selectors, including Mohammad Illyas, Azhar Khan and two co-opted members.

Since the national team returned from the World Cup the central and provincial governments have announced cash rewards for the players and officials but this is the first time the selectors have also been given monetary bonuses.

Mohsin insisted that he and his colleagues will share the amount as they all deserved credit for the team`s good showing.

"My selectors have cooperated a lot with me and backed my decisions and they deserve this reward as much as I do," he said.

In Pakistan, the selectors are the paid employees of PCB, with the chief selector entitled to a salary of 2,50,000 rupees plus other perks and benefits.
