PCB to decide on Afridi`s future as skipper

Karachi: The fate of Shahid Afridi as Pakistan`s one-day captain will be decided on Wednesday when the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt meets with chief selector Mohsin Khan in Lahore.

Well placed sources in the board told PTI that Butt has called Mohsin to finalise the changes in the Pakistan team for the two one-day internationals against Ireland later this month.

"Initially it was thought that the same team that is playing the Tests in the West Indies should also be retained for the two one-dayers. But after Pakistan lost the first Test to the West Indies, the board chairman now wants the selectors to send some specialist one-day players for the Ireland matches as he is not keen on seeing more defeats," the source said.

The source said while it was decided that there would be changes in the squad for the one-day series, a final decision on the captaincy will be taken tomorrow.

At present, Afridi leads the team in T20s and ODIs, while Misbah-ul-Haq is the Test captain.

The PCB had show caused Afridi last week seeking an explanation for making his views public regarding his differences with chief coach Waqar Younis on the composition of the team during the recently concluded ODI series in the Caribbean.

Afridi submitted his reply to the notice but the PCB did not give details of what the flamboyant all-rounder has stated in his response.

The source said that Afridi would find it difficult to win back the confidence of board chairman Butt.

"But the chairman is still not happy with Afridi and it will decided tomorrow whether the board retains him as captain and player for the one-day series in Ireland or decides to either ask Misbah to lead the team in Ireland or opt for Mohammad Hafeez," the source added.
