Colombo: Sri Lanka continued with their rampage against India as centuries by skipper Kumar Sangakkara and Tharanga Paranavitana helped them post a mammoth 312/2 at stumps on first day of the second Test here at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground on Monday.
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Sri Lankan openers Tilakaratne Dilshan and Paranavitana took off to a brilliant start as the duo build a strong partnership of 99 runs, the former claiming his 15 Test half ton in the process.
However, their party was cut short when Pragyan Ojha got Dilshan caught by VVS Laxman at short cover, thus dismissing him for 54 runs.
Paranavitana, thereafter, continued his attack with Sangakkara, leading their team past the 250 run mark.
A blistering 174-run partnership between Sangakkara and Paranavitana (101) added deeply to India’s plight as they slammed their 23rd and 2nd Test centuries respectively to give Sri Lanka a comfortable lead.
The Indian bowlers looked absolutely clueless against the Sangakkara-Paranavitana duo as none could manage to give a breakthrough soon enough to their country. A couple of maiden overs here and there too did not help to the cause as occasional boundaries from the Lankans’ willow kept on adding to India’s woes.
Ishant Sharma then saved some grace for the Indian side as he bowled out Parnavitana for 101 runs in the last session, leaving Sri Lanka at 273/2.
However, Sangakkara (130*) did have miles to go before he could sleep and went on to take his team past the 300-run mark with much help from Mahela Jayawardene (13*).
