Ranji Trophy: Kerala win by an innings and 53 runs

Kochi: A brilliant all-round display by medium pacer Sony Cheruvathur helped Kerala defeat Tripura by an innings and 53 runs with a day to spare in the Ranji trophy Plate Group `A` match on Saturday.

Former captain Cheruvathur returned with match figures of nine for 63 and contributed 77 in 109 balls in Kerala`s first innings.

With this win, Kerala have increased their tally to eight points from three matches. Their earlier two matches between Vidarbha and Services had ended in draws.

Kerala garnered six points, including a bonus point from this match.

Resuming at their overnight score of 223/5, Kerala were all out for 316 in their first innings after adding 93 runs. With arrears of 177 runs, Tripura began their second innings disastrously losing wickets at regular intervals.

Kerala medium pacers Cheruvathur and Parameswaran bowled a tight length and had the Tripura batsmen in a spot of bother.

Tripura`s middle-order batsman K K Acharjee alone managed a decent score, with 47. Tripura were bundled out for a paltry 124 runs in 57.1 overs.

This was Kerala`s sixth innings victory in the 260 Ranji trophy matches the state has played so far. Kerala had notched up their first innings win against Andhra in 1960-61, Goa 1994-95, Andhra 1996-97, Saurashtra 2002-03 and Tripura 2002-03.
