Resilient WI go down with a cheer

Kolkata: As the resilient West Indies rode on a superb century by Darren Bravo to avert the ignominy of an innings defeat against India, four friends donning the Caribbean colours cheered for the visitors amid a sparse crowd at the Eden Gardens on Thursday.

The middle-aged quadruple from Caribbean Islands, who were wearing the burgundy team jersey, waved West Indian flag and savoured every moment of their teams fightback from the upper tier, next to the Indian dressing room.

Raymond Ward and Trevor Williams from Jamaica, Mervyn Douglas from Bermuda and Peter Matthews from Trinidad & Tobago, who have been following the team`s trail since the opening Test, were however surprised at the dull response to the match at the historical venue.

"On TV, we had seen the huge and boisterous Indian crowd. We have always seen them fill the ground to the hilt. It`s little surprising why it`s so empty here," said Matthews.

Mathews who is a member of the Trinidad fan club – Trini Posse -- also expressed surprise at the way Indians idolise their cricketers.

"It`s quite different there. We share a good friendly relationship with our cricketers. We don`t idolise them. Sometimes we also have a drink or two with the cricketers after the game," Matthews said with a smile.

"Can you imagine Mahendra Singh Dhoni doing that?" asked Raymond.

"We are here for the love of the game and these boys love us for that," he insisted.

"In Jamaica, we have a small swimming pool so fans can take a dip midway into the match. The match ticket comes with free lunch and drinks so fans make merry dancing to the tunes of Calypso music," Ward revealed.

India lead the three-Test series 2-0 after their five wicket victory in the opening Test in Delhi.
