New Delhi: Flamboyant batsman Robin Uthappa returns to Indian One Day International squad for the two remaining matches against the visiting Sri Lankan team. He replaces wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha.
It is believed that the 28-year-old's selection has been done keeping in mind his splendid form in the last edition of Indian Premier League. Uthappa performed the dual role of keeping and batting to perfection, guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to the title.
Uthappa will be joined by Rohit Sharma, Karn Sharma, Vinay Kumar and Kedar Jadhav in the Indian squad which is leading by Virat Kohli in Mahendra Singh Dhoni absence. India have already won the five-match series after registering three convincing victories over the Islanders.
Ahead of the 2015 Cricket World Cup, Indian team management is exploring all possible wicket-keeping options should MS Dhoni need a break in any of the games, especially considering skipper' recent injury issues.
Dhoni opted out of the first three matches of the Sri Lanka series as he recovers from a thumb injury. In his absence, Wriddhiman Saha stood behind the stumps. For the remaining two matches, Saha and other seven players have been dropped. They are Shikhar Dhawan, Ravindra Jadeja, Amit Mishra, Ishant Sharma, M Vijay, Varun Aaron and Mohammed Shami.
India will defend their title in Australia and New Zealand when the quadrennial event starts on February 14. MS Dhoni and Co will play their first match in a Pool B match against arch-rivals Pakistan on February 15 at Adelaide. South Africa, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Ireland and United Arab Emirates are the other teams in the pool.
