SA vs NZ, 1st Test: Proteas beat Kiwis by an innings and 27 runs

Things fell apart for the Kiwis when Brownlie was dismissed for 109. Watling and Franklin did put up some resistance but succumbed to some quality and fiery bowling from the South African pacers. Dale Steyn picked up 3/67 while Philander and Kallis picked up two wickets each. ==================================================================================== New Zealand Over: 102.1 II Score: 275/10 South Africa have picked up the two remaining batsmen to win the match emphatically. JEC Franklin b Steyn 22 (2x4 0x6) CS Martin run out 0 (0x4 0x6) ==================================================================================== New Zealand Over: 100 II Score: 265/8 Steyn has been troubling the batsmen a lot especially with the short length deliveries. Franklin was hit a couple of times by Steyn. New Zeland have lost another wicket. Jeetan Patel is bowled by Steyn. New Zealand are still 37 runs behind and have only two wickets in hand. This time its Bracewell who edges one from Philander to third slip. New Zealand are losing wickets quickly now and they still trail by 50 runs. Philander is bowling a very good line and length. Watling had been playing really well but he edges one from Philander and is taken comfortably by Smith in slip. New Zealand trail by 50 runs with 4 wickets remaining. Bracewell has replaced Franklin in the middle. New Zealand scored 63 runs in this session and lost one wicket to reach 232/5.South Africa have toiled hard all morning and have managed to pick up the wicket of Dean Brownlie. New Zealand would be satisfied with their performance in the first session. The highlight of the session was Brownlie getting his century with a beautiful six over the bowler’s head. Morkel got him out to a rather loose delivery. Watling batting on 31* with three boundaries and Franklin batting on 0* will be looking to build a partnership and put their team in a strong position. ==================================================================================== New Zealand Over: 81 II Score: 229/5 South Africa have got rid of Dean Brownlie for 109 runs. Brownlie cut a short and wide delivery straight to Peterson at third man. James Franklin comes to the crease. New Zealand trail by 73 runs. DG Brownlie c Petersen b Morkel 109 ( 13x4 2x6) ==================================================================================== New Zealand Over: 73 II Score: 219/4 Dean Brownlie has completed his century with a beautiful six straight over the bowler. This has been a fantastic knock from the middle order batsman. His knock has been a perfect mix of aggression and defence. He has hit 13 boundaries and two sixes in his knock of 104*. ==================================================================================== New Zealand Over: 67 II Score: 201/4 The Kiwi batsmen have been very circumspect in their approach and have guided their team to 201/4. Brownlie was batting on 87* and has looked very solid in defence. Watling who is on 23* has also given him good support. ==================================================================================== New Zealand Over: 55 II Score: 172/4 Dale Steyn starts off proceedings for the Proteas with a tight over. Surprises Brownlie with a short ball first up. Philander to bowl from the other end with three slips in place. As expected he is swinging the ball and causing problems for the batsmen. Brownlie has to play a long innings here if the Kiwis are to have any chance. ==================================================================================== New Zealand ended day 2 at 169/4 with Brownlie batting on 69* and Watling on 10*. The Kiwis still trail by 133 runs with 6 wickets in hand. South Africa will be looking to strike early and fold up New Zealand for as little as possible. The first session will be very important for both the sides. The Proteas will be looking to pick up a few quick wickets and the Kiwis will look to build a solid partnership and not lose any wickets in the first session of play.
