Review: ‘GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra’ is a big blooper

The movie is nothing short of a shoddy affair; the only saving grace of the film is Sienna Miller, who plays the Baroness. Apart from it, ‘GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra’ follows the escapades of elite team frantically trying to save Paris from nanomites – an evil plot hatched by Cobra Commander. In totality, the movie is a big disappointment especially for all those who have been head over heals in love with the GI Joe series.

Recalling my childhood days during the 80s, I still remember the time when I used to spend endless hours watching GI Joe animated series and playing with its action figures. Nevertheless, with age, you tend to move on and get beyond your childhood fantasies yet, when I heard the news of ‘GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra’ being released, I was simply thrilled and for a second felt the same adrenaline rush as during my childhood years. The slick promos and mind-blowing action scenes running as commercials were tempting enough to push me for the first day first show. Yet, when I saw the film, it was nothing short of a rude shock! ‘GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra’ simply fails to live up to the expectations as it is a terrible watch! Basically, ‘GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra’ is another run-of-the-mill adventure story of elite military organization GI Joe that uses state of the art equipment to fight the forces of evil that are trying for world domination. Lead by General Hawk (Dennis Quaid), GI Joe comprises of Ripcord (Marlon Wayans), Duke (Channing Tatum), Heavy Duty (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Snake Eyes (Ray Park), Breaker (Said Taghmaouni) and Scarlett (Rachel Nichols) who are battling with a missile containing lethal ‘nanomites.’ However, the movie completely forgets Lady Jane and Gung-Ho, someone who have been the core members of GI Joe adventures. Usually, in the animation flicks, one finds the Cobra Commander with a hiss-like baritone but in the movie, Cobra comes with a deep resounding tenor. Another blip in the movie is the hackneyed dialogues that completely wreck the flick. Well, the story does not end here as the movie comes with really bad performances. Check out Tatum who gives a complete wooden look. In totality, the movie is a big disappointment especially for all those who have been head over heals in love with the GI Joe series. Insubstantial plot and slapdash acting proves to be the bane of ‘GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra.’ The movie could have been much better if was handled a bit carefully. As the movie is based on GI Joe comic series, the movie fails to capture the very essence of the cult action series. If you are planning to spend your weekend on the latest release, make sure you give ‘GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra’ a royal miss! Ratings: Two cheers for this one.
