Saurashtra's Jaydev Shah creates Ranji captaincy record

Mumbai: Saurashtra's Jaydev Shah has overtaken Ravinder Chadha of Haryana in the number of matches in which he has led his team in the annals of Ranji Trophy.

The 32-year-old Shah has captained Saurashtra in 88 of the 100 games he has played from 2004-05 to date, including the ongoing Group C match against Himachal Pradesh in Rajkot, according to an official of the Saurashtra Cricket Association.

The earlier record of 83 as captain was in the name of Chadha, who played for Haryana between 1970-71 and 1987-88. He overtook M L Jaisimha's previous mark of 76 as Hyderabad captain between 1959-60 and 1976-77.

Under Shah's captaincy, Saurashtra have won 27, lost 20 and drawn 41 games.

Jaydev is the son of former Cricket Board secretary Niranjan Shah, who has been the secretary of SCA for over four decades and was the moving force in the association building the new stadium on the outskirts of Rajkot, which has now been accorded Test status by the BCCI.
