Sourav Ganguly expected to replace Ravi Shastri as Team India Director: Sources

New Delhi: As the Indian team is set to be announced on May 20 for the Bagladesh tour, a big announcement by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is also on the cards as former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly is expected to take the reins from Ravi Shastri as the Team India Director, according to a media report.

As per a report published in Hindustan Times, loyalists of the out-of-favour former board president N Srinivasan are on their way out of the BCCI, and Shastri is likely to be one of them.

The newspaper sources in BCCI have also learned that BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya is not keen on him (Shastri) as Team India Director and wants Ganguly in a similar capacity.

"The [BCCI] president believes Shastri has been pro-Srinivasan. He does not see Shastri as a long-term member of the team. He is very keen on having Sourav Ganguly as a part of the national set-up," the BCCI source told HT.

India's overseas performance has always been an area of major concern for the board. Shastri, who was made the Team Director to enhance India's overseas performance failed to prove a point. And considering Ganguly's track record as a skipper, he might be the best man to replace Shastri.

"Ganguly knows how to win abroad. He is India's most successful captain away from home. Shastri has not got us the results we wanted, so we could ask Ganguly to step in," the source added.
