Port Elizabeth: Live updates from Day 2 of the 2nd Test between South Africa and Australia being played at at St George`s Park Zee Media Bureau LIVE SCORECARD» | LIVE COMMENTARY» ============================================================== Australia 1st innings, Day 2 Over 25 || Score 112/4 South Africa continued to drop catches, something which cost them dearly in the first Test, as Nathan Lyon was dropped by Duminy at gully in the last over of the day bowled by Parnell. The hosts should be hailed for the competitiveness they have shown from the pitch and had they held onto a few chances, they would have totally been in the driver's seat. Having said that, the Proteas are still in total command of the match as Australia trail by 311 runs with four wickets remaining. David Warner 65* (67b) Nathan Lyon 12* (26b) ============================================================== Over 20 || Score 89/4 He was extremely lucky in the first Test, and despite keeping the run-rate above four runs an over, Warner survived on a few occasions in this innings as well. Warner has scored eight boundaries and is currently batting on 51 off just 56 balls. Meanwhile, Australian skipper Clarke was dismissed by Philander, as he played one towards short cover. South Africa have done extremely well to pick four wickets in the first 20 overs, and had AB held onto that catch, Australia would have been in deep deep trouble. MJ Clarke c Elgar b Philander 19 (28b) ============================================================== Over 10|| Score 42/3 Wayne Warner bowled a brilliant first over when he gave a double blow to the Aussies! Alex Doolan was his first victim, when the right-hander was forced to play a delivery which swung away from him with a brilliant angle and landed into the safe gloves of AB de Villiers. Shaun Marsh – the hero for Australia in the first Test didn't last for long as he slashed hit bat at a ball which was bowled slightly wide and AB took another catch, this time to his left. Philander got the first breakthrough for the hosts when a length delivery nipped into Chris Rogers and hit him on the pads. He missed the line and even reviewed, but the on-field umpire's decision stayed on. Meanwhile, David Warner has played a flurry of strokes against all the pacers and is trying his best to keep the pressure off the Aussies. Duminy's innings ended when he missed out on a reverse-sweep and even though he asked for a review while the umpire had raised his finger, it was indeed out. Morne Morkel was the last man to be dismissed as he was run out. So considering that they were 11/2, 423 looks like a massive total. Time for the Proteas pace attack to make their presence felt, after the batsmen have done their job pretty well. M Morkel run out 1 (4b) JP Duminy lbw b Lyon 123 (231b) WD Parnell c Haddin b Lyon 10 (37b) ============================================================== Over 145 || Score 404/7 Michael Clarke brought himself into the attack after quite some time and immediately got a breakthrough for his team when he dived to his left to take a good catch off his own bowling as Philander's resilience came to an end. Meanwhile, Duminy swept a length delivery from Lyon towards deep midwicket to reach a magnificent century. These are crucial runs for the home team and the entire Proteas camp would very proud of this effort. JP Duminy 111* (216b) Wayne Parnell 8* (28b) VD Philander c & b Clarke 6 (37b) ============================================================== Over 135 || Score 374/6 Philander has provided good support from the other end to Duminy who is now batting on 90. These two have added 25 runs in the last ten overs and Duminy looks also set to score a Test ton, to silence all those who have doubted his potential of late. ============================================================== Over 125 || Score 350/6 Nathan Lyon got another breakthrough for his side as he scalped the big wicket of AB de Villiers who returned a catch to the bowler. It was yet another stupendous knock from AB, and he added valuable 149 runs for the sixth-wicket partnership. Vernon Philander is the new man in and while he too can bat, initially he would want to give the most of the strike to JP Duminy who is batting on 71. AB de Villiers c & b Lyon 116 (232b) ============================================================== Over 115 || Score 322/5 In a good session for the hosts, both overnight batsmen – AB de Villiers and JP Duminy reached their personal milestones, a century and a half-century respectively. Keeping aside the personal achievements, in this unlikely unlike Mitch-pitch, it's hard to expect a result. The sight of these two classy batsmen wearing down the Aussie bowling attack, its a good one for any batting team but the result – a draw? =================================================== Over 110 || Score 303/5 AB de Villiers on 95 and JP Duminy on 46 have posted a 100-run partnership at St George's Park. Following that 3rd wicket stand between Elgar and du Plessis, this 5th wicket partnership will allow South African to go for kill in the later part of the match. =================================================== Over 105 || Score 282/5 In the last five overs, South Africans have showed an intention to increase the scoring rate. In this form, this Australian bowling attack – with all their name and fame, will need to dig hard to break this partnership. Probably, a de tour for captain Clarke to take to get into the match. One such opportunity did arrived. But AB de Villiers survived the inside edge off Ryan Harris' incoming delivery in the 105th over. =================================================== Over 100 || Score 263/5 With two successive boundaries off Nathan Lyon, AB de Villiers reached his 70s. In his 170-ball innings so far, the South African batsman has hit 10 fours. In his company, JP Duminy is cruising along. He has scored 30 runs from 73 balls with five hits to the boundary. Peter Siddle, who has so far bowled 27 overs without success, has been the busiest bowler in this innings. Next is Nathan Lyon with 25 overs. Nothing more for the Aussies! =================================================== Over 95 || Score 246/5 South Africans continued to consolidate their position in the match with the partnership of AB de Villiers and JP Duminy growing with each passing delivery. For the first time in this series, South Africans are controlling the match with Mitchell Johnson reduced to a sideshow. =================================================== Over 90 || Score 236/5 The day started with the new ball, with Ryan Harris starting the proceedings. Despite an overcast condition, South African duo in the centre, are coping the Australian attack without much difficulties. Their 5th wicket partnership has so far yielded 36 runs with JP Duminy scoring the bulk of the runs. =================================================== Port Elizabeth: The first day of second Test between South Africa and Australia allowed other players, other than Mitchell Johnson, to share the limelight. When bad light stopped play, the score was 214/5 from 83 overs. After a disastrous opening session, South Africa rode onto a 112 3rd wicket partnership between Dean Elgar and F du Plessis to resurrect the innings. Before this partnership, South Africans were struggling at 11/2 inside the first six overs after Ryan Harris and Mitchell Johnson removed Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla respectively, both LBWs. However, Elgar – who is making making a comeback, batted with confidence before departing at a personal score of 83. Spinner Nathan Lyon, after breaking the century partnership, also removed du Plessis to provide Aussie pace bowlers another crack at the Proteas batting line-up. But, the day`s other wicket came from the part-time bowling of Steven Smith, who got the better of debutante Quinton de Kock. At stumps, AB de Villiers and JP Duminy were batting on 51 and 2 respectively. In the process, AB crossed 7000 Test runs, becoming the second fastest South African to achieve this feat, only behind Graeme Smith. It was also his 12th consecutive score of fifty or more – a record in Test cricket.
