Sri Lanka appoints Jerome Jayaratne as interim head coach

New Delhi: Days after Marvan Atapattu resigned as the head coach, Sri Lanka on Monday appointed Jerome Jayaratne as his replacement.

Sri Lanka made the news official through its account on social micro-blogging site Twitter.

Sri Lanka also issued a press release that said, "Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that SLC Head of Coaching Jerome Jayaratne, has been appointed as the Interim Head Coach of the Sri Lankan National Team with immediate effect for the upcoming West Indies Series in October / November 2015."

Following their 1-2 series loss to Virat Kohli-led Indian cricket team in the recently concluded three-match Test series, Atapattu on Thursday stepped down as the coach of the national cricket team.

Atapattu was appointed as the head coach in October 2014, previously serving as the Batting Coach to the team from 2011 and as Interim Head Coach for a brief period from April 2014 after Paul Farbrace resigned.

The Angelo Mathews-led side are undergoing a transition phase and are short of match-winners since the retirement of legendary duo of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene.
