Galle: At the end of the second days play between Sri Lanka and England, the Lankans lead by 209 runs with five wickets in hand. The day was dominated by spin bowlers from both the sides. Here is how the days play panned out:
Over 8.1 Out! Swann nets the big fish! And it is first innings centurion Mahela Jayawardene. A straighter one from Swann and Jayawardene looked to defend it but the ball took a thick outside edge to land in the hands of Anderson at first slip. Jayawardene (5) b Swann
Over 6.2 Out! It is Swann who castled Lahiru Thirimanne. Swann tossed one around middle and leg and Thirimanne was beaten as he closed the face of his bat a bit early. The ball went past his bat to hit the stumps. Thirimanne (6) b Swann
Over 1.6 Out! Tillakaratne Dilshan was bowled by Stuart Broad. The ball was pitched between middle and off and Dilshan went for a drive towards onside but misjudged the line. The ball crashed on the stumps. Dilshan (0) b Broad
Highlights from the England innings
Over 46.4 Out! Monty Panesar was the last man to be dismissed as England were bundled out for 193. They trail Sri Lanka by 125 runs.
Over 40.5 Out! Bell got bowled by Herath. The ball was pitched on the middle and spun away sharply to hit the top of the off stump. Bell (52) b Herath
Over 39.4 Out! Graeme Swann was caught at short midwicket by Dilshan off Suraj Randiv. A fullish delivery on the pads and Swann charged down the track clipping it in the safe hands of Dilshan. Swann (24) b Randiv
Over 37.3 Ian Bell completed his fifty. Score: 148/7
Over 32.1 Out! Herath completed a five-wicket haul! He dismissed aggressive Stuart Broad who attempted a sweep but missed the ball that struck him on pads. Broad(28) b Herath
Over 26.1 Out! Herath was turning out to be England’s chief tormentor! He trapped Samit Patel who instead of going forward went for a backfoot stroke. He missed the arm ball completely to be trapped in front. Patel (2) b Herath
Over 18.6 Herath picked his third wicket of the day in Matt Prior. The ball was pitched on leg and was turning away. Prior missed it and the ball struck him on back pad. He was adjudged lbw, a decision that went upstairs for review which was upheld. Prior (7) b Herath
Over 17.1 Out! Kevin Pietersen was bowled by Chanaka Welegedara. It was a full outside off delivery and Pietersen stretched forward for a drive but instead got an inside edge that landed on the off stump. Pietersen (3) b Welegedara
Over 14.1 SIX! Ian Bell launched Herath over long on for a sixer that also brought up the fifty for England.
Over 12.4 Out! Herath dismissed Andrew Strauss. It was a full delivery from Herath and Strauss went for a sweep but missed it. Umpire adjudged not out and Lanka went for the review. Umpire Asad Rauf overturned the decision. Strauss (26) b Herath
Over 10.3 Out! An unusual dismissal for Jonathan Trott. It was a full toss from Rangana Herath and Trott gave him the charge, missed the ball and keeper did well to collect it and dislodge the bails. However, in his endeavour to make it back on time, Trott fell on celebrating Prasanna falling flat on the ground. Trott(12) b Herath
Over 1.5 Out! Suranga Lakmal trapped Alastair Cook in front of the wickets. Cook discussed with Strauss and decided to not review the verdict departing for a duck as England lost their first wicket. Cook (0) b Lakmal
Earlier, Mahela Jayawardene was the last man to be dismissed as Sri Lanka were all out for 318 in 96.3 overs on Day 2 of the first Test against England at Galle.
It was largely due to Jayawardene’s 180 runs that Lankan team was able to post a respectable total in their first innings after James Anderson had them almost on the ropes on Day 1.
Anderson finished with five wickets including the priceless wicket of centurion Jayawardene.
