Mumbai: Naseeruddin Shah and Benjamin Gilani formed Motley Theatre Group thirty years ago. To celebrate the completion of its three successful decades, Motley has come up with a fortnight of special presentations in the form of ‘Motley Festival 2009’. Talking about his brainchild, the veteran actor spoke to a news daily recently, “When Motley began, we didn’t think beyond that first production. In a quick fade-out, thirty years and almost that many productions have gone by.” Motley has produced several short and full-length English plays and has for the last eight years been performing in Hindustani as well. From being an itinerant troupe of two, Motley now has a pretty large membership that includes illustrious names like Tom Alter, Ratna Pathak, Kenny Desai and Akash Khurana. The group has regularly toured the country and has also taken their presentations offshore. Since its conception in 1979, Motley’s versatility and diversity of topics remains its unique attraction to date. With ‘story-telling’ theatre, Motley has found its niche and is serving the purposes of both entertainment as well as education.
