Supreme Court wants SLC to conduct elections

Colombo: The Supreme Court on Monday directed Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and elect office bearers to run the game in the country.

The directive came in response to a case filed by United Southern Sports Club, which sought intervention of Apex Court to order elections for SLC administration in place of politically appointed interim committees.

The three-member Supreme Court bench asked the parties to revert to it in six week`s time with an agreed plan which should lead to the holding of the AGM.

The case will be heard again early July.

The club claimed that their fundamental rights have been violated by non-elected bodies which continue to administer the game in Sri Lanka.

SLC has been consistently run since 2005 by politically appointed interim committees.
