India defeated Afghanistan in the Group A fixture of the ICC World Twenty20 by 23 runs at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo here on Wednesday.

Chasing a target of 160 Afghanistan were all out of 126 runs in 19.3 overs. Yuvraj Singh and L Balaji scalped 3 wickets each.

For Afghanistan Mohammed Nabi top scored with 31 runs in just 17 balls. The top order of Mohammad Shahzad (18), Nawroz Mangal (22) and Karim Sadiq (26) provided a good start but the introduction of slowers bolwers did the trick for India. Ravi Ashwin also picked up 2 wickets.

Earlier, India posted a score of 159 for the loss of 5 wickets in their opening ICC World Twenty20 fixture against Afghanistan courtesy a half century by Virat Kohli (50). Raina scored 38 runs.

For Afghanistan Shapoor Zadran took two wickets conceding 33 runs in his 4 overs. The Afghans dropped three catches on the field and were indiscipline in the blowing department conceding 16 extras.

In their only meeting till date, India had comfortably beaten Afghanistan by seven wickets during the last edition of World T20 in the West Indies.

While the battle of attrition will start once India take on England, a smooth start against the Afghans will certainly help the `Men in Blue` hit a good rhythm and the team management will have an idea about the performance of their preferred combination.

Players to watch

Virat Kohli: The Delhi youngster has set the stage alight with some eye-catching batting in the last year or so and he has shown that he performs exceptionally when something special is expected off him. He had a World Cup (50 overs) to remember last year and will be doubly eager to add another glittering trophy to his ever growing cabinet.

Hamid Hassan: The Afghan pacer has already made people sit up and take notice with his ability to make the ball swing. He is one of the best bowlers among the associate nations and will be keen to use this tournament to show his worth and win admirers around the world.
