Tamil Nadu gets its own Premier League; N Srinivasan promises return of Chennai Super Kings in IPL

New Delhi: Former BCCI chairman N Srinivasan on Thursday announced the launch of Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) in Chennai. The three-week long tournament will feature eight teams.

“The main idea behind TNPL is to bring cricket to the districts of Tamil Nadu and explore local talent,” said Srinivasan on the new league.

The new Twenty20 league will reportedly see 27 matches being played across three centres including Chennai, Natham and Tirunelveli.

The winners of the league will take home a prize money of Rs 1 crore while the runners-up will get Rs 60 lakh.

Srinivasan, 71, also said that suspended Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will return in 2018, without intervention.

"Yes, we did not have an IPL team this year, but already one season is gone, one season is left after that automatically Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will come in without any intervention," he added.

CSK and Rajasthan Royals (RR) were suspended last year from IPL for a period of two years each following IPL betting scandal in 2013.
