Adelaide: Former India coach Greg Chappell said that the Australian fast bowlers used the ‘Chinese-torture method’ to bring about the downfall of the famous Indian batsmen in the ongoing Test series.

Talking to a leading Indian newspaper, Chappell, a former Australian batting great and a selector, said: “Our pacers have followed the Chinese water-torture method. Just as the water goes drip, drip drip, our bowlers have kept pegging away outside the off-stump, secure in the knowledge that sooner or later a batsman`s resistance will break.”

Chinese water torture is a way to punish the offenders. It is a method in which water is slowly dripped onto a person`s forehead with an aim to make the victim insane.

Among the Australia bowlers, said Chappell, a fit Ryan Harris was the best.

“If fit, Harris is our best bowler. Siddle was too short last season. He has bowled fuller against India. So have Pattinson and Hilfenhaus,” said Chappell.

He also praised newly-appointed bowling coach Craig McDermott. “Craig (McDermott) has been very good with them, said the former coach, who had grabbed a lot of the media headlines for his bitter relations with the then Indian captain Sourav Ganguly.
