New Delhi: Steve Smith thanked Cricket Australia (CA) for naming him the captain in Tests after Michael Clarke announced his decision to retire from international cricket after the last Ashes Test.

Smith, who has been a run-machine for Australia in the last one year, said that he was excited about leading the team in the future.

Smith also took the opportunity to mention that Clarke had been one of the greats of Australia cricket the team would want to give him a winning farewell.

Australia have been overshadowed by Alastair Cook & Co in the ongoing series, where they now have an unassailable 3-1 lead after crushing the visitors by an innings and 78 runs at Trent Bridge.

Clarke had announced retirement from ODIs after leading Australia to their fifth World Cup title.
