Warne asks Smith to be grounded ahead of debut

Melbourne: Shane Warne has asked his young protégé Steve Smith, who will make his Test debut against Pakistan, to keep his feet on the ground.

Smith has every delivery in a leg spinner’s box of tricks.

Warne inspired the 21-year-old Smith to bowl leg spin, and urged his young protege not to get ahead of himself, The Courier Mail reports.

“I think he has all the toys. But he is pretty raw and is a work in progress - nowhere near the finished product. He really has to make sure he keeps his feet on the ground. I wouldn’t be expecting too much of him just yet,” Warne said.

“I said to (former Test captain) Mark Taylor a while ago that I was hoping Smith got a fair bit of first-class experience in different conditions before he played Test cricket. But he has now been rushed in and is very, very early in his development. He will almost certainly have some good days and some bad days.

“He will have to learn his craft on the run while playing Test cricket. That is pretty difficult to do. But as long as he is patient with developing slowly I am OK with that,” Warne added.
