Melbourne: Australian Twenty20 captain Cameron White reckons that the door is open for “everyone” to earn a ‘Baggy Green’ following South Australia spinner Nathan Lyon’s surprise selection for the upcoming Sri Lanka Test tour.
Lyon usurped Steven Smith in the squad despite playing only four first-class games and not being offered a Cricket Australia (CA) contract.
When asked what message Lyon’s selection sent players, White said: “Very interesting question. It is a tough one for me to answer.”
“It seems as though the door is open for everyone in first-class cricket, one-day cricket, and Twenty20 cricket to play Test cricket - if that makes any sense,” he added.
White further insisted that if a player is in the right place at the right time, the selectors could pick him.
“In my mind the Baggy Green and Test cricket is still the ultimate,” a sports channel quoted White, as saying.
