WI coach blames seniors for defeat

Mirpur: West Indies coach Ottis Gibson today blamed senior players for their shoddy show in the World Cup but said not all of them will be sacked as they would be needed to re-build the team along with the youngsters.

Players such as Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shivnarain Chanderpaul and hard-hitting batsman Keiron Pollard came a cropper while former skipper Chris Gayle also could not do much as West Indies crashed out of the tournament with a 10-wicket defeat against Pakistan in the quarter-finals today.

"I`m not especially happy with senior players. Our performance depended on the seniors but they didn`t do well. But it is hard to say it is the last game for the seniors. We need them as it won`t happen with only youngsters," said Gibson at the post-match press conference.

"It is a fact that senior players didn`t perform. Some of them are playing their second and third World Cups while we have guys who made their debut in this World Cup," he added.

The coach refused to blame skipper Darren Sammy for the shoddy show in the premier cricket event.

"You might think that the captain might be under pressure as he didn`t make the runs but he became captain due to circumstances, due to some people`s decisions.

"We came in good spirit with good young players but now we are looking at April 21 when we host Pakistan. We will have to take some tough decisions about players," he said.

Talking about today`s defeat against Pakistan, Gibson said his side lacked in confidence and once the team was out for a paltry total, they were never in the game.

"The wicket didn`t get anyone out. It was a combination of poor batting and a lack of confidence. You can only do so much in the nets but the rest is upto performing in the middle but we had low confidence after getting bowled out against the big teams.

"We had a meeting last night about the spinners, using more of the bat but our batsmen played for spin and the ball went straight on. Maybe it is a technical thing but we need to take a good look," he said.
