Mohali: Cricket fans who were protesting against lack of adequate number of tickets for the high-profile World Cup semi-final between India and Pakistan at Mohali were lathicharged by Punjab police outside the PCA Stadium on Monday.
Similar incidents have occurred in the past few weeks. Police had to resort to lathicharge on fans at the old stadium of Vidarbha Cricket Association in Civil Lines locality in Nagpur following a melee to grab tickets for the World Cup match on March 12.
When counters for sale of tickets to the general public opened here, there was a mad rush and some fans even broke barriers to reach the counters, resulting in a melee, police said.
Similar instances of crowds being lathicharged have occurred in Bangalore earlier on February 24 due to the heavy demand of tickets.
