Differences in PCB selection committee become public

Karachi: The spat between chief selector Mohsin Khan and selector Muhammad Illyas over the selection of Fawad Alam became public when the latter didn`t attend a meeting called to pick the preliminary squad for the 2011 World Cup.

Illyas didn`t attend the meeting despite being present at the national cricket academy where the meeting was held for over three hours.

The selectors discussed with captain, Shahid Afridi, and coach, Waqar Younis, and will meet PCB chairman Ijaz Butt tomorrow, before finalising the squad.

Illyas, a former Test player, had tendered his resignation to the PCB chief recently when Fawad was included in the T20 and Test squads for the New ealand tour.

"I didn`t attend the selection committee meeting, the reasons for which I have made clear to the board chairman," Illyas said.

Butt had rejected the resignation and asked him to continue.

Sources close to the selectors said that the delay in finalising the preliminary squad was mainly because of the issues surrounding some of the senior players.

"The selectors still have mixed feelings about not selecting Kamran Akmal, Shoaib Malik and Danish Kaneria in the preliminary squad and are awaiting a final meeting with the board chairman on Wednesday," one source said.

The source said that, in an interesting development, Kaneria and Akmal had been called for another meeting with the board chairman on Wednesday.

"Kaneria has been summoned from Karachi although he met with the board chairman recently," the source said.

Indications are that the International Cricket Council has not given clearance to the PCB to consider the three players.

Coach Younis also made it clear that only those players should be picked in the World Cup squad who were only focused on cricket and not on other things.

"Pakistan cricket is passing through difficult times and our efforts should be to pick only those players who only focus on cricket," he said.

Waqar said that he was pleased with the attitude of the senior players in the national training camp and said it had had a positive effect on the juniors as well.

"I want to make this World Cup a memorable one for myself and go out on a high note. I want to have good memories of this World Cup," he said.
