New Delhi: All India Football Federation
on Sunday said it has a commitment to hold the season-ending Super
Cup and decision on the one-off contest will be taken in a
couple of days.

I-League champions Dempo had sent a letter to the AIFF,
suggesting that their Super Cup match against Federation Cup
winners East Bengal may not be held as its players are not
interested in it after a long season.

"The decision about playing the Super Cup is a commitment
AIFF has with the sponsor. AIFF has no objection if the
sponsor wants to hold the prize distribution at any other time
with an appropriate function," AIFF General Secretary Alberto
Colaco told reporters.

"A decision about this (Super Cup) will be taken in a day
or two," he added.

Super Cup is the match between I-League champions and
Federation Cup winners and the prize distribution ceremony of
the I-League season is also normally held after the match.

Last year, then Federation Cup winners Mohun Bagan had
defeated Churchill Brothers in the Super Cup to win Rs 10 lakh
as prize money.

In his letter to the AIFF, Dempo coach and Secretary
Armando Colaco had hinted that holding Super Cup match does
not serve any purpose and the prize money should better be
used for youth development.

"The players are reluctant to play the Super Cup. They
are tired after an extended season and have no motivation
left," Armando had written in the letter.

"My players have won the biggest prize this season. Is
there anything more to achieve? Even if the Super Cup is held,
I can assure you from experience, that the players will only
go through motions. They will only be completing formalities.”

"The one-off contest offers big prize money. Instead that
money can be utilised towards youth development," Armando had
said.
