AIFF to invite proposals for I-League`s telecast rights
New Delhi: In what seems like a last-ditch effort to get its flagging league back on track, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has decided to invite proposals for I-League`s telecast rights for the season 2010-11 on its website.
The federation is also going to invite proposals for the Super Cup match, scheduled to be held on December 1 in Gurgaon, between defending champions Dempo and Federation Cup winners East Bengal.
"The invitations will be posted on our website and the proposals should reach us by Monday 3pm," said AIFF general secretary Kushal Das.
"Apart from the I-League 2010-11 season, we are also going to invite proposals for the Super Cup," Das added.
Speculations are rife that Reliance-IMG is favourite to bag the rights but sources have indicated that two Kolkata news channels -- Kolkata TV and Channel 10 -- are also in contention and will bid for the rights.
The AIFF recently terminated its USD 70 million 10-year deal with Zee Sports four years ahead of its expiry.
The deal was to run till 2014, but it had a clause to review it after five years.
It is widely believed that delayed payments, lack of enough publicity and bad coverage are some of the reasons which forced the AIFF to terminate the contract, for which the federation is likely to pay a whopping sum that amounts to crores of rupees to the sports channel.
The AIFF, recently, also approached major industrial houses -- Jindal Steel and Videocon -- to sponsor the I-League.
