London: Arsenal hasn’t lost all hope yet of keeping Robin Van Persie at the club, as the London based club will head into next week’s make-or-break talks with their captain, hopeful the contract rebel would perform a Wayne Rooney-style U-turn.
Van Persie stunned the club earlier this month with an unflattering statement questioning the club``s ambition whilst confirming his intention not to sign a new contract.
The Dutch international is due to return to pre-season training next week and manager Arsene Wenger will take the opportunity to hold a heart-to-heart with his talisman in the hope that he can persuade him to change his mind.
Arsenal is still ‘very hopeful’ of securing the long-term future of Van Persie, according to a well-placed source at Emirates, The Daily Mail reports.
Officials at Arsenal feel Van Persie`s contentious statement was just a tactic by the forward`s agent Kees Vos to secure his client a better deal, which is reminiscent of Rooney`s contract confrontation with Manchester United in 2010.
Rooney released a statement confirming he wanted to leave Old Trafford after talks over a new deal broke down.
However, just a few days later the England international signed fresh terms after being offered more money by United.
Arsenal has offered Van Persie a three-year deal worth 130,000 pounds-per-week plus a five million pound loyalty bonus.
Whether Arsenal`s hopes have some substance remain to be seen, nevertheless the club are still doing all they can to convince their star man to sign a new deal.
