New recruit Robert Lewandowski, a prized acquisition from Borussia Dortmund this summer, scored Bayern`s opening goal on 29 minutes before Franck Ribery added a quick-fire second.

But a brace from Max Kruse -- both of which came from the penalty spot -- hauled Moenchengladbach level before spot-kicks were eventually required to separate the sides.

Stand-in Bayern goalkeeper Tom Starke kept out Oscar Wendt`s effort to keep Pep Guardiola`s side alive in the shootout before Julian Korb struck the crossbar to hand Bayern victory.
