New York: Tesho Akindele, a Canadian-born forward for FC Dallas, was named Major League Soccer`s Rookie of the Year on Monday after scoring seven goals and setting up three more over 26 matches.
Born to a Nigerian father and Canadian mother in Calgary, he moved to America with his family at age eight and holds a US green card.
Akindele played for a Canadian junior team in a 2009 friendly but rejected a call to join Canada`s national team earlier this month, saying he remains undecided about trying to play internationally for the United States or Canada.
"I don`t know what the future might hold," Akindele said. "I`ve talked to both the US and Canada camps. I guess we will see what happens."
After an injury sidelined Argentine striker Mauro Diaz, Akindele netted six goals in six games for Dallas from early July to mid-August, including a hat trick at San Jose on August 16.
"It has been a fantastic year," Akindele said. "I couldn`t be happier."
Akindele helped Dallas reach the MLS playoffs for the first time since 2011 and scored a goal in a 2-1 playoff victory over Vancouver in the opening round of the playoffs.
