Churchill take on Bagan on Friday

Margao: Defending champions Churchill Bros will continue their desperate bid to retain the title when they meet Mohun Bagan in the 24th round of the I-League, played at Nehru Stadium.

Dempo, having all but secured the title after their 2-0 win over Air-India yesterday, will now have to wait for tomorrow`s outcome between Churchill bros and Mohun Bagan, if Churchill lose or draw against Bagan than Dempo will be crowned the champions.

If they win, Dempo will have to wait for the next round to win the title for the fourth time. A point from next two matches will take them to unbeatable lead.

Churchill Bros who are placed third with 35 points from 21 matches, still have a mathematical chance of winning the title as they have played two games less than Dempo.

But for that to happen, the defending champions must win their last five matches and hope Dempo drop points in all their games.

Churchill also have the distraction of the AFC Cup knockout stage and interestingly they have won back to back games only once in the second half of the campaign.

But their convincing win against Salgaocar have brought them back to winning ways and coach Carlos Pereira will be hoping his boys keep up the winning momentum going as they need to win all their five matches from now on with a bigger margin to challenge Dempo.
